Here is information about TAC's minor driver (and rider) requirements. These restrictions are set by our insurance company.

Basic Requirements:
  • All drivers and riders must have a full, unrestricted drivers license.
  • Additionally, any driver or rider under 19 years old, must have a minor waiver signed by at least one parent or guardian.

TVR events are sanctioned (and insured) through the SCCA, and SCCA rules apply to TVR events. Refer to Digital Annual Waivers on the scca.com website. Here's some of the SCCA minor waiver verbiage.

"MINOR ANNUAL WAIVERS
A minor taking part in an SCCA event as a competitor, on track participant, or volunteer or worker with access to restricted (hot) areas must have an Annual Minor Waiver on file for the calendar year. Age of Majority is 18 years except in AL and NE at 19; MS at 21."

Other waiver, licensing rules apply for such things as the Tire Rack Street Survivor schools, where SCCA is a co-sponsor, and SCCA regions (such as TVR or ALSCCA) organize the schools. Waiver, licensing rules for those events are detailed for the specific event.

Joe did a fantastic job discussing TVR/SCCA minor waivers, but I'm happy to answer any questions about direct events if needed. In short, they're somewhat different and have a different process to go through.

Thanks for the info, Joe and Tom!

I have a son about to turn 16 and get his (Alabama) driver's license and was hoping to help him develop some understanding of car dynamics and control. I was originally planning for him to participate in the TAC performance driving school in the spring, but found out that he won't be able to due to the club's insurance not covering restricted lisences.

I was hoping that I could at least bring him out to a TVR event to get some seat time, assuming the SCCA rules and issurance permitted. Are there any plans to host a Street Survival event this year locally?

Thanks again! And happy cone dodging!
